As a new PERS member, or are returning to PERS-covered employment after a minimum 24 month break in service AND have refunded your contributions, you will have approximately 12 months to choose a retirement plan. You must choose either:
The Defined Benefit Retirement Plan (DBRP) or The Defined Contribution Retirement Plan (DCRP)
PERS New Hire Handbook (Printable)
Note: Montana University System members have a third choice called the Montana Univeristy System Retirement Plan (MUS-RP) which is administered by TIAA-CREF. If you are currently employed by the Montana University System, read this information: Montana University System Employees ONLY
EDUCATIONAL SERVICES AND TOOLS
MPERA offers more tools to help you make your decision. Check the Education Calendar for the next available workshop to learn more about your retirement plan options. The PERS New Employee Plan Election class is designed to help you better understand the two MPERA administered plans before making your retirement plan choice. Online classes are held frequently and are offered free of charge.
If you are unable to attend a class, our New Member Plan Choice Educational videos can walk you through your choices.
In addition to our class offerings, MPERA staff is available to answer any questions you may have regarding your retirement. Our office can be reached at: 1-877-275-7372 or 406-444-3154.

PLEASE REMEMBER THAT YOUR CHOICE IS IRREVOCABLE. ONCE YOU CHOOSE A RETIREMENT PLAN, YOU CANNOT CHANGE YOUR MIND!
If we do not receive your completed election form by the end of your twelve month election window, you will default permanently into the Defined Benefit Retirement Plan (DBRP).
